Fun for expats in The Netherlands

HISWA Boat Show

Visit the largest event for water sports lovers in The Netherlands from 6-10 March. The HISWA Boat Show in Amsterdam is the official opening of the sailing season and attracts more than 35,000 visitors. Here you will discover the latest trends and designs and learn all about equipment or boat hire. It is a wonderful day out for both adults and children as you can participate in all kinds of fun water activities, such as surfing and wakeboarding. Since last year, the event has completely renewed and now offers more information about lifestyle and recreation.

The European Fine Art Fair

Experience Maastricht’s yearly feast for art lovers during The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) 16-24 March. The fair is recognized as the world’s leading art fair because of its commitment to excellence, expertise and elegance. Over 7000 years of art history will be presented by more than 275 internationally renowned exhibitors. You will find a total of 35,000 pieces for sale, such as Old Master paintings, antiques, classical antiquities, modern art, photography and jewellery.

Opening Keukenhof

Experience the most beautiful views of blooming Dutch tulips and other flowers during Keukenhof’s Spring opening from 21 March until 19 May. Keukenhof is the most famous and largest flower park in the world, where more than 7 million flower bulbs are planted every year. This year's theme, 'Flower Power’, celebrates the inspiration and joy the Keukenhof flower gardens bring to people from across the globe. You will see this theme reflect in various events, such as a Flower Power weekend and Woodstock Festival.

Movies that Matter Festival 

Watch movies with a message during the Movies that Matter Festival in The Hague 22-30 March. It is a film festival by Amnesty International to create awareness for situations where human rights and human dignity are at stake, using film's capacity to open eyes. Their mission is to stir debate and promote human rights education. Besides movies you can also participate in talk shows and debates and enjoy music performances.

Amsterdam Open Tower Day

Get a unique view of Amsterdam from the top of various historic and modern towers during Open Tower Day on 23 March. Beautiful buildings, that are usually closed to the public, open their doors on this special day. Previously, classical buildings such as the Beurs van Berlage and the Westertoren participated, but also famous company buildings like the ABN Amro headquarters and the Crown Plaza. Various activities will be arranged, such as guided tours and a photography and film competition. The event is free, however access to some towers is limited and/or requires advance registration (available from 10 March).

Summer time!

On Sunday the 31st of March, in the early hours, the clocks go forward for Summer time/Daylight savings time. This means that the sun will come up a bit later in the morning and the sun will stay out until later in the evening. So don’t forget to put your clocks forward 1 hour before going to bed on the night of the 31st.
