CANADA:  New immigration procedures to be implemented in Alberta

In a bid to offer a more streamlined service the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (ANIP) will replace and introduce new immigration processes, effective 2 January 2018. Further to this only one application form from this date will be utilised which will also help to make the process more simplified.

There will be no change to the Self Employed Farmer Stream but the two most important changes to note are as follows:

  • The Alberta Opportunity Stream will replace the Employer-Driven and Strategic Recruitment Streams and will combine multiple current processes and streams into just one procedure;
  • The Alberta Express Entry Stream is new and will allow the province of Alberta to nominate a limited number of qualified candidates from the government of Canada’s Express Entry system. Via the current Express Entry system, if an applicant is eligible he/she can create an online profile and will be entered into a pool. The applicant will then be ranked against other candidates in the pool and if they come out on top they will receive an invitation to apply for permanent residency. Applicants can improve their ‘scores’ by gaining additional relevant work experience or improving their language skills or education.

Applications received before 2 January 2018, for the Employer-Driven and Strategic Recruitment Stream, will fall under the rules and criteria that are in place at the time of submission.
