CHINA: Changes in work permit renewal process

Effective 28 February 2018, foreign employees working in China must submit their on-line work permit renewal application at least 30 days prior to the expiry day of their work permit.

Those who fail to comply with this new regulation will be denied the renewal and will have to start a new work permit application process which requires a number of documents to be submitted, such as authenticated university diploma and police clearance certificate.

In general, work permit extension can be submitted no more than 90 days prior to the expiry day.

How does this affect the client?

Companies should ensure that expiry dates of their employees’ work permits are monitored and renewal applications are submitted no later than 30 calendar days prior to expiry.

It is advised that employees with pending work permit extension application limit their international travel during that period so that the extension may be completed smoothly.
