CHINA: Plans to create new State Immigration Administration

The Ministry of Public Security in China has announced its plans to create the State Immigration Administration to oversee the entry and exit of foreign nationals, as well as other immigration functions that previously existed among various government agencies.

The new government agency was created, in line with China’s recent policies, favouring a more open border and its intention to attract highly-skilled foreign workers.

It is expected that the new administration will help track and control the flow of foreign nationals who stay and work in China, enhance existing immigration services and encourage the entry of global talent.

The State Immigration Administration will be responsible for formulating immigration policies and their implementation, border control activities, regulating foreign nationals, taking lead in coordinating the administering of foreigners who illegally enter, stay or are employed in China, and the repatriation of illegal immigrants.

The administration will also provide exit and entry services for Chinese nationals and engage in international immigration agreements.

How does this affect the client?

The new agency will help track the flow of foreign nationals who stay and work in China and it will improve existing immigration services and attract global talent.
