INDIA: Deadline for conversion of PIO into OCI extended

The Indian government has announced that holders of a Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card have an extra six months for the conversion to an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. The new deadline is set for 31 December 2017 and the conversion will be free of charge. 

The PIO (2002) and OCI (2005) were implemented in order to provide extra immigration benefits for foreign nationals in India. Confusion among the Indian diaspora caused a merged into the more beneficial OCI in 2014. Since then the deadline for conversion has been extended three times.  

How Does This Affect the Client?

PIO card holders are advised to take action as soon as possible in order to avoid- travel related complications. The application form is available here.
