QATAR:  80 nationalities can now travel visa-free to Qatar

Effective immediately, nationals from 80 countries can now enter Qatar visa-free for stays of up to 30 days or 90 days.

Nationals from the Schengen Area Member States, plus Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania, the Bahamas, Malaysia, the Seychelles and Turkey can obtain a multiple-entry visa upon arrival for stays of up to 90 days.  The visa is valid for 180 days from the date of issuance.

Nationals from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States can obtain a multiple-entry visa upon arrival for stays of up to 30 days.  It also has the possibility to be renewed for an additional 30 days and  is valid for 180 days from the date of issuance.

Nationals of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates) do not require a visa to enter Qatar.

Background

Beginning in June many countries have cut diplomatic ties with Qatar as well as trade boycotts.  They have imposed trade and travel restrictions on Qatari citizens and ordered their citizens to leave the country.  Several have even closed their airspace and airports to flights to and from Qatar and all flights of state-owned Qatar Airways.

In the face of the ongoing hostility towards Qatar from their neighbouring nations, the Qatari cabinet approved a new law on 2nd August that allows the Ministry of Interior to grant permanent residency to some foreign nationals already living in the country.

How does this affect the client?

Employers sending foreign nationals to Qatar for business or work should consult their immigration professional to confirm the latest requirements and recommendations.
