SINGAPORE: Broadening of work visa pass

As per 15 January 2018, The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) in Singapore expanded the eligibility for the online Work Pass system (to all permit holders, not only Marine and Maritime workers) and have also started to issue new work permit cards.

As reported in ReloTalk back in September 2017 the MOM wanted to develop an online Work Pass system that would eliminate the need for a physical pass and therefore allowing renewals and details to be updated online. The hope was that this would enhance security and ensure card authenticity.

Since 15 January the newly issued cards do not contain variable information such as expiry date or role but this can instead be checked online or via the newly developed SGWorkPass app.

How does this affect the client?

Employers should be aware of the change and ensure that their processes are updated and that all foreign nationals receive the updated card in a timely manner to avoid any issues with immigration. Ultimately it will save time for both employers and foreign nationals in an extension process since the card will not need to be replaced.
