SWITZERLAND:  Swiss Government announces Work Permit Quotas for 2018

New quotes for new work permit applications was announced 29 September, 2017 by the Federal Council of Switzerland for the upcoming 2018 calendar year.  The new quotes affect both Non-EU/EFTA nationals with a stay greater than four consecutive months/120 days per year and EU/EFTA nationals on assignment/secondement with a stay greater than four consecutive months/120 days per year.

With the continual economic need for specialists from third countries, the federal authorities have decided on the following quotas for 2018:

Non-EU/EFTA Nationals revised quotas:

  • the number of B long term permits will be increased by 500 authorizations to 3500.
  • the number of L short term permits will remain the same as 2017 at 4500.

Important to note:

Quotas for non-EU-EFTA nationals on assignment/secondement are released on a calendar year basis and even though more work permits will be available, the quota could still be exhausted well before the end of the year

EU/EFTA Nationals on assignment/secondement revised quotas:

  • the number of B long term permits will increase by 250  authorizations to 500
  • the number of L short term permits will increase by 1000 authorizations to 3000

Important to note:

Quotas for EU/EFTA nationals on assignment/secondement are released on a quarterly basis and are frequently exhausted before the end of each quarter.

How does this affect the client?

Employers should plan ahead and not wait until the end of the year to submit important important applications.  Also consider adopting  multiple strategies to work within the quotas, such as:

  • utilizing  trainee exchange programs between Switzerland and various countries where there are separate quotas for trainees
  • reduce short term assignments to four months or 120 days per twelve month period as these are not subject to quotas
  • promote Swiss local employment contracts instead of secondement status for EU/EFTA nationals coming to work in Switzerland
