UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: Restricted procedures for employment sponsorship transfer

Effective immediately, companies actively executing employment sponsorship transfers within a free trade zone have to adjust to new requirements. These will have structural impact on the transfer procedures and validity of residence permits, of which the most important changes include:

  • New employment residence permits will only be valid for a maximum of three years.
  • Before their transfer, expats must obtain an Emirates ID card and will have to undergo a medical examination.
  • New employers will need to get approval from previous employers before the transferee can be released.

How does this affect the client?

As employment sponsorship transfer was previously a relatively easy procedure for expats to obtaining visas, the new process restrictions should be taken into account.
