UKRAINE: Visa Rules for EU Simplified for Ukrainian Citizens and Vice Versa

The European Parliament has approved visa free trips for Ukrainian citizens for a period of 90 days within a 180 day period, this does not include visas to work. Although it has to be approved by EU member states, the change is expected to take effect in June 2017. Ukrainian nationals will need a biometric passport to be eligible for the waiver.

The Cabinet of Ministers in Ukraine has in turn introduced measures to make it easier for foreign nationals to obtain a visa for Ukraine. An online application is now possible (for a 30 day single entry visa) as well as simplified requirements for the invitation letter and reduced processing times for standard applications.

The visa on arrival has also been extended to more nationalities and will be available for business visits as well as tourism for stays of up to 15 days.

How does this affect the client?

These changes will greatly improve the mobility of people travelling to and from Ukraine and can eliminate some of the administrative burden of visa processing. Longer processing times however should be expected for obtaining a biometric passport for Ukrainian citizens in order to fall in line with the new rules.
