UNITED STATES: Visa validity shortened for Chinese students

The US State Department has announced to shorten visa validity for Chinese students in fields like robotics, aviation and hi-tech manufacturing.

In addition, an increased number of cases will be subject to inter-agency clearances. President Trumps’ Visa restrictions will start on 11 June “to reduce economic theft by non-traditional intelligence collectors”.

US Consulate officers may limit how long visas are valid, rather than issuing the maximum possible length as is currently the case. New clearance requirements may result in lengthy processing delays for visa applicants.

Chinese nationals involved in STEM fields have been subject to clearances before based on potential violations of export laws, but it is unusual to screen visa applicants for concerns of U.S. intellectual property theft.

How does this affect the client?

The new clearance requirements may result in lengthy processing delays and shorter stay allowed.
