VIETNAM: Online pilot for work permit applications to become mandatory

As of the 1 July 2017 submission of certain applications via the new online system will become mandatory. The implementation of this new online system is intended to facilitate the visa process and reduce lead times.

Types of applications that can be submitted online include; new work permits, work permit renewals, job position approvals, and work permit exemption certificates.

Submissions will be authenticated by an online e-signature and employer’s must have an online account. Applications to obtain said e-signature or to register for an account will be available via the government portal. Although approval of applications will be based on soft copies of documents uploaded via the portal, hard copies will still need to be presented later on for checking.

Additional benefits of the new system also include the possibility to check the status of the application and to be alerted to any potential issues.

Currently this is only applicable to Hanoi, Vung Tau and Tra Vinh provinces. The departments of labour in other provinces are expected to implement the changes but as of yet have not announced any deadline to do so.

How does this affect the client?

Employer’s applying for foreign nationals to work in the aforementioned provinces should take into account that from 1 July they will have to use the online portal for certain applications. Further, they should ensure that they are already registered for an online account and e-authentication before this date. Once in place though lead times should be reduced.
