VIETNAM: Residence cards cancellation required prior to departure in certain provinces

Certain provinces in Vietnam are now requiring foreign nationals to surrender and cancel their Temporary Residence Card (TRC) prior to leaving the country at the end of their assignments. The foreign nationals and, if applicable, their dependents will have to apply for an exit visa in order to leave the country.

The passports of the individual will be kept at the Immigration Department for the duration of seven days for processing. An exit visa will be issued stating the applicant is allowed to stay until the intended departure date.

This new procedure has been implemented with immediate effect; however Ho Chi Minh City and other provinces have yet to implement this requirement. In those provinces, foreign nationals can follow the usual procedure by mailing back their TRC from overseas after final departure.

How does this affect the client?

Foreign nationals who reside in the affected areas and whose assignments are ending are advised to apply for an exit visa 3-4 weeks prior to the intended departure date.
