EUROPEAN UNION: Proposal to enlarge the Schengen Area and Euro Zone, whilst security to remain tight

On 13 September 2017 the President of the European Commission advocated to extend the Schengen Area to include Romanian and Bulgaria and also Croatia at a later stage once criteria are fulfilled. Even further than just geographical reach the President went further to suggest that this wanting to join the Euro should be facilitated in their wish by introducing better ways in which to help them.

At the same time a statement has been released by authorities that internal border checks and controls are to remain in place for at least two more years with more measures to be introduced from October 2017.

How does this affect the client?

Employers should remind their foreign nationals travelling within the Schengen Area to always carry their passport whilst travelling as well as the relevant permits. The enlargement of the Schengen Area can have a beneficial effect for mobility of an EU workforce for employers in the region.
