HUNGARY: Minimum salary level increased

Effective from 1 January 2018, the minimum monthly salary for unskilled foreign workers has increased to HUF 138,000 (approximately EUR 445), which is an increase of 8.2 percent compared to last year. For skilled workers there is an increase of 12.1 percent and the minimum monthly salary for skilled workers is now set at HUF 180,500 (approximately EUR 582).

How does this affect work permit applications?

  • Salary calculations: A foreign worker’s salary must be at least 80 percent of the average salary and cannot be lower than the minimum salary level for the specified position according to Hungarian standards.
  • Initial and renewal applications: All initial and renewal applications for foreign nationals must meet the new salary levels when seeking to obtain or renew a work permit after 1 January 2018.
  • Pending applications: All pending work permit applications as of 1 January  2018 must meet the new minimum salary rules and regulations.

It should be noted that applications that do not meet the minimum salary, will be rejected. Benefits and allowances are not allowed in the calculation of the minimum salary.
