INDIA: Deadline for linking Aadhaar number extended

The deadline for residents to link their bank account, mobile SIM card, PAN (Permanent Account Number) card and insurance policies to the Aadhaar number has been extended until 31 March 2018.

There were already several deadlines for linking these accounts to Aadhaar. The latest one was published by the Ministry of Finance on 13 December 2017.

In 2017 it was made mandatory to quote an Aadhaar number (unique identification number) to file income tax returns (ITR) or to apply for or renew a PAN (Permanent Account Number).

Then, in May 2017, as we reported here, foreign nationals had been made exempt from this requirement.

At present, foreign nationals who have been a resident in India for more than 182 days in the previous 12 months are advised to submit an Aadhaar number when filing their income tax returns. Aadhaar will also be required for banking, mobile phone and insurance services.

How does this affect the client?

It is advised for foreign national residents in India to obtain an Aadhaar number as soon as possible to allow time to link it to their bank, mobile phone and insurance accounts before the 31 March 2018 deadline.
