SAUDI ARABIA: New requirement for foreign engineers

In recent months the Saudi government has been implementing changes in line with recent efforts to increase the hiring of locals over foreign nationals. As reported in the previous ReloTalk the Saudi government has been implementing measures to ensure that employers must hire more locals before being permitted to hire foreign nationals under the Nitaqat system.

Even further to this development, another new requirement has just been announced; foreign engineers are now required to have at least five years experience before being eligible for a work permit. Previously it was three years, but on the condition that they pass professional examinations by the council of engineers and also be called for a face to face interview.

How does this affect the client?

Employers should review their current recruitment plans to ensure that any foreign engineers that they intend to hire now meet the requirement of 5 years experience.
