SINGAPORE: Salary criteria for dependant sponsorship set to increase

Effective 1 January 2017, the minimum salary requirements for Employment Pass and S Pass holders to sponsor dependents will increase by 20% above current levels.

Employees must now earn a fixed monthly salary of 6,000 Singapore dollars in order to be eligible to sponsor a spouse or child on a dependents pass and S$12,000 to sponsor parents on Long Term Visit Passes.  Compared to the current criteria where expatriates must earn a fixed monthly income of S$5,000 to sponsor a spouse or child under 21 and S$10,000 to sponsor a parent.

These new minimum salaries affect those holding an Employment Pass or a S Pass who are planning to sponsor new family members or transfer employment.

How does this affect the client?

For those applicants who may be disqualified under the new salary criteria are urged to apply for family member sponsorship prior to 1 January 2018 as applications received prior to the implementation date will be subject to the current criteria.  For those with renewals for dependent passes and long-term visit passes that are approved or issued prior to the end of this year will be assessed according to the current criteria provided that the employee remains with their current employer.  Employers and foreign nationals should consider these changes as these increases could pose challenges for both employers and employees.
