UNITED STATES: President Donald Trump announces support for Senate Bill

President Donald Trump announced his support of Reforming American Immigration for Strong Employment (RAISE) Act. The Bill proposes a radical restructuring of the current US immigration system but is likely to face significant opposition from both businesses and Congress. The Bill aims to reduce overall immigration to the U.S. by half in the next decade

How does this affect the client?

The proposed system would replace the five employment-based green card preference categories with a merit based points system. The Bill further includes:

  • Elimination of the Diversity Lottery
  • Introduction of a skills-based points system prioritizing green card applicants based on education, age, record of achievement, English language skills, offered salary and entrepreneurial initiative.
  • Capped quota of 140 000 per year for the employment based green cards

The proposed system would also introduce restrictions on family based immigration:

  • Cap the amount of green cards awarded to refuges at 50,000 per year
  • Eliminate preference categories for extended family members and adult family members of U.S. citizens and permanent residents
  • Maximum age of children qualifying as dependent for all U.S. immigration programs, will be reduced from 20 to 17 years of age.
